Just a moment…

February 10, 2008 § Leave a comment

This writing life (not to copy Annie Dillard’s book title) but anyway, this writing life is odd. It is personal. You work and work on something for days, weeks, months, and then, because it’s contract work, you have to let it go to the editor, or the client.

You’d rather not hear anything from that client or editor. Silence gives consent.

Silence can be far better than a response asking for something more, something totally different because that editor or client wasn’t sure what he wanted in the first place

You worked hard on it. That’s what you do.

Your writing is strong.Your writing/work ethic is strong. The recipient of your writing is not aware of that, does not pay $ for ethics or even for excellent writing. They pay only for whether or not you hit the target, a target not even they could express.

It is on such days that I realize I want to be my own client.
