Gimme a sign of Spring
Oh, baby
to get me through the night.

I can’t take the bleak gray
baby
Bring on the Spring sunlight.

unrecorded and spontaneous lyrics by a totally cabin-fevered Oh
(note to BB King – um, yeah, this is just a little Blues dittie; no need to write me with a WTF? )

But wait, surely these are signs of Spring …

The irrepressible crocuses …er … croci?

dsc_02751 Nope, not a pussy willow – this is a magnolia, getting ready to pop out of its furry little pods!

In the northeast, the sighting of a robin is the first sign of Spring. Not true here in the Midwest but still, Monsieur Robin brings a surge of  joy to this writer.

BOOKS SELECTIONS…

spring_torrents1
THE TORRENTS OF SPRING by Ernest Hemingway…
What????
I never heard of this one ’til searching for books to put here relating to “spring.”
Honestly, how many suitcases with novels in them did this man lose?

This one was apparently published in 1926, kind of a predecessor to THE SUN ALSO RISES.  Well, kudos to you if you’ve read this one…or even heard of it.

silentspring
SILENT SPRING by Rachel Carson – written in 1962 and now credited as one of the top 25 science books ever, Ms Carson called everyone’s attention to the damages of DDT particularly on our bird population and led a decade later to the banning of the radical pesticide.
Good writers rule!

Trip to the botanical gardens, perhaps?
I am so ready for spring… it must be here, right? I know I’m on a “break,” but I have my Top Ten Reasons Spring is here list ready to post.

    Love you!

  • oh says:

Yo, Beeps – Just went to the Gardens yesterday!!! took some pictures. All grey. Pooh. Freaky storm today; tought way to get blue skies.
Will be glad when you’re back to posting everyhwhere!

  • anno says:

Your pictures sure don’t look like it was all grey — these are some welcome signs, indeed! We’re still at that stage where everything looks like bleached celery and mud, a month or so behind you.

  • Alesia says:

My kids are on the hunt to see the first robin here in Vermont. My husband claims he saw one yesterday, but no one else was there to verify.

  • qugrainne says:

I saw two robins last Friday an KNEW it was a sign of spring…. until Saturday rolled around. I wonder what those poor robins are doing now?

    Great little blues ditty 😉

  • Carrie says:

I would LOVE to see signs of spring around here. I’ll have to keep my eye out for open-toed shoes & fresh buds on trees.

  • jeanie says:

First of all, great ditty — Sing it, BB!

Second, you are fortunate to live in a part of the country where you are seeing robins and flowers already. I know — come the hardest heat of summer, there is an exchange of fortune — still. Lovely. And lucky!

And no, I never heard of that Hemingway — but he never fails to surprise me!

  • Care says:

Oooo… Silent Spring would be an EXCELLENT choice for this month, considering it would count for both the Women’s History Month Challenge AND the Science Challenge. I must remember this when I get to the library on Thursday.

  • oh says:

Dear A – ah, the color in the pictures? Well, they were so dun-colored, I turned up the heat on the greens and oranges. “Bleached celery …” great description.

Alesia – you made me laugh with the “no one there to verify.” I’ll bet he saw one. Maybe you have, too, by now?

Q – robin sighting that far north? Oh, they’re tough (wonderful) little birds, no? Perhaps they’ve holed up in one of your outdoor lamps during the snow/cold.

Carrie, I’m thinking of cruising DSW just to see the masses of shoes and, some bright colors?

Jeanie – May have to do a road trip this summer when it does heat up here. HM and i have been talking about Mackinaw.

Care – I hope Silent Spring works out for you. It sure has staying power.

  • I LOVE that photo of the magnolia buds! (Hmm, maybe a magnolia should be what I choose to replace my doublefile viburnum in front of the house…)

I also love that you and HM start your weekend together on Thursdays, and why. That’s wonderful. 🙂

  • Snarl says:

Spring is nice, but I prefer the fall. They’re sister seasons anyway.

Both have color and change. It’s the cold that I miss. Come back cruel, gray winter. Come back.

  • oh says:

BSG Kim! Great to hear from you. I must go check your blog and see if you’re back…with some spring tips?

Snarl – So you like winter, eh? Sure you don’t want to come along if we go south for a vacay?

  • lovely photos, I like the idea of recommending books that fit in with your posts,

  • anne says:

    magnolia buds pic- beautiful !

i owe you an email through FB…. i have not forgotten !
