Baked …

You are invited to partake … and I have a pot of fresh coffee, too … come on over!

I always make a pie when Snarl is  in the house. But something about Spring said “No, do something different.”

Not a recipe queen by any means and having no desire to thumb through my Joy of Cooking (1975 edition), I cheated. I hightailed it to the store, counting on some quick solution or epiphany.

Betty Crocker hailed me from the grocery aisle shelf, the baking section of course, and suggested I go for a French Vanilla cake mix.
“But that sounds like something I myself would like to eat,” I said.
“Precisely,” she answered, and the cake mix box, illustrating a gorgeous double layer cake in French vanilla colors, white, yet creamy, tumbled into my basket. Snarl does, after all, favor a yellow cake, and this was nearly yellow.

“But that’s cheating,” I said. “I should make something from ‘scratch.'”

“From ‘scratch’? ahahahaha. But if you insist on putting some effort into this little endeavor, I suggest you make the icing.  My cake, your icing. A match made in gourmet heaven!” said old Betty C.

“Right! Excellent,” I said and thought about what I needed next as I trolleyed down the aisle to the confectioner’s sugar, cocoa powder, then off to the dairy section for real butter. I had already decided I’d do cupcakes. With chocolate butter cream icing.

College kids like cupcakes – they’re personal, easy, neat, fun, and if topped with thick icing, they’re nearly perfect.

I made this up about college kids; those are all reasons that I like cupcakes.

Snarl loves cake. He loves cake with or without icing. That works out because the way I piled on the icing, three cupcakes went un-iced.

Book Selection … (ya’ didn’t think I was going to skip doing something about writing/reading, did ya’?)

JULIE AND JULIA by Julie Powell.  A nice little book. A young married woman (in NYC!, well, Long Island City, really, which in Queens, I believe) decides to write a blog as she cooks her way through Julia Childs’ masterwork on French cooking. Julie will accomplish this in one year, or will she? And along the way, she creates quite a blog following. You might enjoy it, a bit of foodie fluff and fiction. BTW, they’re making a movie out of it. It could be better than the book, simply for its visuals, fun in the kitchen and the antics of Amy Adams and Meryl Streep (as Julia, Herself)!

This is my idea of baking, too. I love cupcakes, and they’re all the fashion now 🙂 Your’s look quite yummy.

I’ve had Julie and Julia from the library once, but had to return it unread (ran out of time and couldn’t renew). I love reading books about food and cooking…just read The School of Essential Ingredients which was very good!

  • ds says:

    I “heart” cupcakes–those look awesome!

  • laylou says:

Those look yummy. I’m a little jealous. I haven’t baked in about a week!

  • Bellezza says:

I find The Joy of Cooking so Joyless. It’s a cookbook that resembles War and Peace: so much information that may be helpful, but isn’t entirely necessary to the finished product. I do like the way you piled on the icing, and made it chocolate!

  • Kim L says:

Yummy. I LOVE cupcakes. They are my absolute weakness, so I never make them.

  • Ahh, Gotta love the Red Spoon! 🙂 Cute story! I loved reading this post.
It makes me get in the mood to make cupcakes. I just checked bettycrocker.com -they have over 70 recipes. Awesome. 😀
Also, I’ve heard so many good things about that book I still need to read it.
    Sincerely, C

Thanks, Becca! And if you do get to read Julie&Julia, let us know what you think.

DS – mmmm… they came out ok, ‘specially the icing but the scale is resultingly not my friend!

Laylou – you are the designated family baker. Don’t worry – you’re not going to lose that title!

Bellezza – what a perfect comparison of cookbook to classic-thousand-of-pages fiction! Excellent. And a big oh-yes to chocolate, esp. as vanilla’s best contrast.

Kim – You are smart to not make them. I made 17 of them yesterday. There were 3 left this morning before I left for work. t’s now nearly 10 pm. Remaining cupcakes? There are none.

Hi, RapidSpoon- wow – 70 recipes. Maybe I should do a cupcake challenge, where I bake different ones, every day … for a year? Maybe just for a week.
As for the book, hope it turns up in your TBR list. Enjoy!

  • Snarl says:

Yeah, Jami, Dave and I ate the remaining few last night while watching a movie.

    Thanks for the treat.

    Yummmmmmmmmmm!
And the blog/cook/book sounds like a fun, easy read. I will put in on the list for one of my lazy days!

I am very lucky to have a daughter who does all the baking in my house… well, maybe not so lucky because if the chocolate cake is there, I must eat some.

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Oh!!

Cupcakes. Oh, I love them! And how I wish I could enjoy a cupcake and cuppa tea with you! So, this comment is for both your posts as the dial-up is so pokey. But I love the flowers — isn’t it lovely to see spring — even if it disappears for a few days, surely it can’t be gone for long. Your flowers are simply lovely!

And I’ve been meaning to tell you how much I love your connecting your post to a book. (And glad for the J&J plug, as I loved that book so much!). “Secret Garden” is a favorite, too. Very nice way to incorporate so many things you love into one and so gracefully!

    Enjoy the day!j

I find such comfort in using my kitchenaid mixer.

I really need to get that book, its been on my list for a while!

  • oh says:

Snarl – glad cupcakes worked in lieu of pie. Maybe I”m on to something here, eh?

Q – Here’s to daughter’s that cook and bake! And it was a lovely “green” day – at your house, too?

Jeanie- I’m glad you like the picture/book combo I’ve been trying out. And you are feeling better and better, right? the boys are spoiling you?

Hi, Mandy thanks for stopping by. The book is on its second cover. I think it just might be doing pretty well. See what you think!
