Got nuts?

January 16, 2012 § 9 Comments

This is Archie the Elder.  There are two other squirrels in our little ecosystem.  Here, the Elder stares down the patio door from whence he knows that some mixed nuts (the kind you buy in a bag at holiday time for people to crack and enjoy while waiting for dinner) just might appear.

Dommage. There will be no more tossed from the kitchen door. They are now placed in the backyard around the wood pile. Meanwhile, Archie becomes quite the character on my storybook pages!

That second photo is utterly appealing. I love that typical squirrel pose. I think it’s called “supplicant” – as in, “Pleaseohpleaseohplease, oh! Give me some nuts!”

and sure enough, I scooped some nuts from the cupboard and went through the laundry room to the garage and out to the driveway to toss the nuts near the woodpile and away from the house. I can’t resist his “supplicant” posture as you perfectly describe! but I can resist having them too close, too! Such little characters. I have experimented to find that they do indeed all the kinds of nuts with shells intact. I love watching them find a brazil nut or a full walnut and cram one in their mouths (really, can only fit one walnut) and off they run to stash it, then return to look for more. yes, it’s the stuff of stories. B Potter did it so well…!

I love your bold little squirrel.

He knows to put the pressure on, that little guy. But there won’t be any of that hand feeding going on here – in fact, I don’t encourage him to evenget near to the house. Oh, the tales I’ve heard of such squirrel friendships. Anyway, at the moment, he’s polite and well, so are we!

They really do look like they are begging!

mmmm….cute, from a distance! And they can be quite entertaining when the trio of them huddles under the birdfeeder to eat and talk and whatever else goes on with them!

I adore Archie. Welcome back and may your find all the treats you like! That statue — interesting. Can’t decide if I like it, but I admire the creativity behind it!

Hi, J, Yeah, the Archmeister is always around and wiht the leaves off the trees, his little nest mansion is prevalent – why it doesn’t blow away in the crazy winter winds we have, I don’t know. ANyway, we feed him and his two little pals along with a second bird feeder now for the smaller birds. Gotta get more time back on early weekend mornings to watch all the activity back there, but this winter weather has us staying under the blankets rather than popping up at the crack of dawn!
