Becca‘s prompt this week is (again) fun and offers a peek into other writers’ habits, something we’re always curious about.

1)  Do you write fiction or non-fiction?  Or both?
BOTH, but my fiction is spontaneous and unfinished.

2)  Do you keep a journal or a writing notebook?
I KEEP JOURNALS. Erratically.
I also collect notebooks (and journals). It’s a “paper” thing.

3)  If you write fiction, do you know your characters’ goals, motivations, and conflicts before you start writing or is that something else you discover only after you start writing? Do you find books on plotting useful or harmful?
I JUST JUMP INTO FICTION. I get a feel for a place or a person and I begin to write. Little wonder that I have not, to date, finished a book of fiction, nor even come close. Not yet. I have little patience for books on plotting except for one I purchased recently called WRITE A NOVEL IN 30 DAYS. I’ve opened it twice.

4)  Are you a procrastinator or does the itch to write keep at you until you sit down and work?
ALTHOUGH I DANCE AROUND THE WORK AND LOOK LIKE I’M PROCRASTINATING, I’M NOT. It’s like a ritual, my thought process and my circling of the chair and the eyeing of the desk and PC. Once writing though, I stick. I just keep going. I always tell myself that I can fix it, edit it tomorrow.  And I grind on through the night ’til it’s done. Done for the moment.

5)  Do you write in short bursts of creative energy, or can you sit down and write for hours at a time?
I CAN GO FOR HOURS. I LIKE THE BURST METHOD, TOO; IT TYPICALLY BETTER SUITS MY SCHEDULE.

6)  Are you a morning or afternoon writer?
MORNING. And conversely, late night. But not both in the same day, at least not consecutively!

7)  Do you write with music/the noise of children/in a cafe or other public setting, or do you need complete silence to concentrate?
I LOVE LIFE AND SOUND HAPPENING AROUND ME as long as I’m there as a disinterested, “disinvolved” person.

8)  Computer or longhand? (or typewriter?)
TYPICALLY PC, BUT L.O.V.E. LONGHAND. Though I’d love, too, the sound of a typewriter, I’d scramble it, get the keys all stuck at once and it would be nearly unreadable – I’m used to the saving grace of the backspace key!

9)  Do you know the ending before you type Chapter One?  Or do you let the story evolve as you write?
WHILE I MIGHT NOT KNOW THE STORY (AS INDICATED HERE IN AN EARLIER ANSWER) I ALWAYS KNOW THE END.  THIS GIVES ME COURAGE TO SET OUT AND WORK MY WAY THROUGH THE MAZE TO THE ENDING.

10)  Does what’s selling in the market influence how and what you write?
NO.

11)  Editing/Revision – love it or hate it?
LOVE IT. It means I’ve written something! And that now I get to shine it up, pare it down, get it to glisten if it’s held just so, in the light.

    I KEEP JOURNALS. Erratically.

HAHA I totally get that ‘”paper” thing’
and keeping journals erratically , and sporadically. 🙂

  • Redness says:

Interesting that we have a number of similarities – I adore mem’s and ‘that paper thing’ too – “now where did write that…?” haunts me 😉

  • Jeanie says:

I’m a happy editor, too. I just love it! And the paper thing — oh, dear! I fear we’d have quite a time if we got together! I collect journals, wonderful papers, I make my own. I used to think it was an “art thing” but I find that writers do that, too. Oh, and pens — do you do pens? My favorite birthday gift was a small journal from Italy — my friend watched as they marbled the papers and then made it into a book. Just touching it is glorious!

I love your last comment: It means I’ve written something! And that now I get to shine it up, pare it down, get it to glisten if it’s held just so, in the light.

    So beautiful!

I’m jealous of people who can write in the morning. I’m just never awake enough.

  • anno says:

I love “the saving grace of the backspace key” — and, yes, I know it all too well. Your pre-writing ritual sounds a lot like mine, only too often I never quite make it to the writing part. You sound far more disciplined than I.

  • I can write any time, morning, afternoon, evening, night! I hate editing, though!

Dear Particle – the journal thing is crazy, isn’t it? As in, you can start one and really get going and you’re halfway through it and then someone gives you a new one or you just happen to purchase a new one and maybe start writing in THAT one…and so I have some that I should go back and fill…but that would be non-chronological!

Redness – yes! the haunting of “where did I write that?” and of course nothing gives a clue, no “search and find” on handwritten stuff!

Jeanie – so many of those handmade papers (well, all of them!) are glorious. It would be awesome to get together with a fellow paper lover! Do they have conventions?

Thanks, Writerbug – hope you’ll stop by again. Becca has created such a group with her WOW. Cool, huh?

Kim – Part of the reason I’m up is due to our beagle, who wakes at 5 a.m. to go out. So I should say our dog is the morning person, but once I’m up with him, I’m up! And no one else is, so it’s a great “think” and write time.

Hi, Anno – nah, not disciplined here. I’m all over the map. ‘Til I sit down. And there’s always so much going on, isn’t there? It’s tough to be separate from the family activities and being outdoors and all the etceteras. We keep going forward in paragraphs and pages, though!

Good morning, Gautami T – Just keep writing, writing, writing! The editing will come. Oddly so much editing comes with throwing out some of your favorite lines that just don’t go with the rest of your piece, but you had to write them down anyway.

  • oh says:

Jeanie – yes! I forgot to mention pens. I have a cigar box where I keep favorites! There are even a couple in the box that are give aways from trade shows but they are so remarkable to write with. And HM (husband) gives me one every Xmas…
We really do need a pen-and-papers convention!!!

I have been in Lala land, so I am commenting late….. I just have to tell you, this was so much fun to read. I got the “feeling” of who you are as a creative person by reading this.
I am envious of your comment, “I ALWAYS KNOW THE END.” I don’t, but wish I did! I have to work my way to it, and worry on the way.
Thanks for sharing this part of you.

  • Becca says:

This was great fun to read! I’d love to be a fly on the wall in your writing room 🙂

I think all writer’s have a “thing” for paper, don’t we? And pens, and notebooks, and folders…all the necessary equipment.
